This Safety Specialist job at Nutrien in Augusta, GA focuses on enhancing site safety culture, ensuring regulatory compliance, and leading proactive behavioral-based safety initiatives. The position supports training, coaching, auditing, and emergency response activities across the site.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and support behavior-based safety initiatives through mentoring, coaching, and meeting participation
- Participate in safety reviews and provide technical expertise in Tap Root investigations and similar evaluations
- Advise on improvements to existing safety systems and suggest alternatives to reduce risk
- Document and accompany OSHA/MSHA, insurance, and other safety inspections of the site
- Coach personnel to maintain compliance with SHE requirements while promoting a positive safety culture
- Deliver onboarding training for employees and contractors, with regular follow-ups and performance assessments
- Provide MSHA/OSHA compliance training and facilitate understanding of Tier Standards and SOPs in field settings
- Reinforce sustainable safety habits through mentoring and structured field guidance
- Support leadership in meeting safety performance expectations across departments
- Contribute to technical safety training and assist with integration of best practices
- Collaborate with the Training Department on safety alignment initiatives
- Coordinate and improve Safety Team Leaders meetings and related training sessions
- Monitor, track, and analyze safety metrics, incidents, and KPIs to drive continuous improvement
- Support root cause analysis for incident investigations and submit findings to internal databases
- Develop and update standard operating procedures and safety documentation
- Test, evaluate, and recommend new personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Assist with industrial hygiene programs, including fit testing and audiometric assessments
- Actively engage in emergency management drills and response planning
- Maintain OSHA, MSHA, ETQ, and PSM contractor records
- Deliver contractor training, safety briefings, and field audits; provide real-time feedback to stakeholders
- Collaborate with contractors to align safety performance with Nutrien’s long-term safety goals
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma required; associate or technical degree preferred
- 5–7 years of experience in the petrochemical or related industry is preferred
- OSHA certification preferred
- Knowledge of chemical plant operations, safety procedures, and hazard control practices
- Strong leadership and coaching abilities across employee and contractor levels
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office and ability to perform safety-related research and documentation
- Experience with incident investigations, safety audits, and continuous improvement programs
- Willingness and motivation to obtain professional safety certifications
