Hertfordshire County Council is hiring a qualified Fire Safety Inspector to strengthen its fire safety enforcement team in the UK. This role is essential to ensuring public safety by evaluating fire risks in complex premises, issuing legal notices when required, and advising on compliance with UK fire legislation.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct inspections of complex and high-risk premises to assess fire safety compliance.
- Prepare comprehensive reports and issue legal or enforcement notices as appropriate.
- Review fire safety systems in licensed or regulated buildings.
- Collect and document legal evidence in compliance with court standards; attend court proceedings when necessary.
- Mentor junior inspectors and contribute to high-quality, consistent fire safety service delivery.
- Conduct research and support strategic fire safety improvement initiatives.
- Provide expert advice to businesses, internal departments, and the public under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.
Essential Criteria
- Ability to read and interpret architectural drawings and detailed site plans.
- Skilled in evaluating and validating complex fire risk assessments.
- Excellent written and verbal communication for both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Understanding of fire development and building fire behavior.
- Strong time management and workload balancing skills.
- Experienced in writing professional fire safety reports and enforcement letters.
- Expertise in UK fire safety legislation, codes, and guidance for complex premises.
- Completed Edexcel Level 4 Diploma in Fire Safety (Fire Auditors) (QCF) or equivalent.
- Confident in using IT systems including MS Word, Excel, databases, and spreadsheets.
- Valid UK driving licence and willingness to use a personal vehicle for work travel.
- Flexible to work outside normal hours if required.
✨ Desirable Qualifications
- Minimum of 3 years’ experience conducting fire safety inspections across diverse building types.
- Strong knowledge of fire service operations and how they align with fire safety regulations.
- Familiarity with Hertfordshire County Council’s internal IT systems is an advantage.
