Position Overview

An exciting opportunity is open for an experienced EHS Specialist II in Indianapolis, USA, with a focus on maintaining and enhancing environmental, health, and safety (EHS) standards. This role involves driving regulatory compliance, fostering a proactive safety culture, and supporting operational excellence within a dynamic research and development setting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver expert-level guidance on compliance with federal, state, and local EHS regulations and applicable industry standards.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of EHS training programs designed to educate supervisors and employees on safe practices and compliance.
  • Establish and maintain EHS policies, procedures, and best practices aligned with operational needs and safety goals.
  • Act as a technical resource on-site, potentially serving as a Chemical Hygiene Officer, Radiation Safety Officer, Emergency Coordinator, or other EHS authority.
  • Serve as the main EHS contact point at the site and collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders including HR teams.
  • Manage environmental programs, including waste handling—monitoring quantities, coordinating pickups, and maintaining proper labeling and packaging procedures.
  • Oversee safety systems involving contractor management, facility inspections, and fire protection measures.
  • Lead or contribute to EHS-related committees and safety teams, such as emergency response groups or department-specific safety initiatives.
  • Maintain the Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and Hazardous Materials Management System to ensure accuracy and compliance.
  • Prepare and submit required reports such as air permits, wastewater logs, emissions records, and incident tracking documents.
  • Implement and monitor critical safety programs such as lockout/tagout, confined space entry, respiratory protection, and hazardous waste protocols.
  • Investigate workplace incidents and chemical spills, conducting root cause analysis and recommending corrective actions.
  • Proactively identify hazards and assess risks in the workplace; implement corrective actions where needed.
  • Support procurement and facility modification reviews to ensure adherence to EHS compliance requirements.
  • Act as a lead spill responder or emergency response coordinator, when necessary.
  • Communicate effectively with internal teams and regulatory bodies to ensure transparency and ongoing compliance.
  • Complete other related EHS functions as assigned.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a science or technical discipline.
  • Minimum of five years of EHS experience, preferably in a laboratory, biotech, or R&D setting.
  • Eligibility to be appointed as a Radiation Safety Officer or Chemical Hygiene Officer, supported by formal training and experience.
  • Professional certifications such as CSP, CIH, or credentials in environmental safety are highly desirable.
  • Ability to travel up to 10% of the time.
