Education and Experience Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience in radiation and/or hazardous waste management, environmental management, or equivalent education and experience.
Preferred Licensure and Certifications:
- Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) preferred.
- Other relevant certifications such as Associate Safety Professional (ASP) or Occupational Safety and Health Technologist (OSHT) will also be considered.
Key Responsibilities and Duties:
Compliance and Safety Inspections:
- Conduct periodic inspections of facilities to ensure compliance with biosafety, hazardous materials, hazardous waste, laboratory, radiation, and general safety standards.
- Report any non-compliance issues or hazardous conditions to principal investigators and managers.
- Assist in collecting environmental and industrial hygiene samples using various monitoring and analytical equipment.
Hazardous Waste Management:
- Oversee the collection, storage, and disposal of chemical, biological, and radioactive waste from laboratories and other facilities.
- Maintain hazardous waste accumulation areas in compliance with RCRA standards.
- Manage hazardous waste tracking systems and coordinate radioactive material waste programs.
Transport and Disposal of Hazardous Materials:
- Assist in evaluating, preparing, and transporting hazardous chemicals and radioactive materials for disposal.
- Ensure proper segregation, documentation, and EPA/DOT classification of waste materials prior to transport.
- Schedule and facilitate waste pickups while maintaining accurate records and preparing required reports.
Laboratory Support:
- Collaborate with Principal Investigators and laboratory staff to set up, maintain, or close laboratories.
- Ensure proper introduction, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials.
- Communicate and enforce regulations related to radiation protection practices.
Equipment Maintenance:
- Perform regular tests, repairs, and calibrations on environmental, radiation, and industrial hygiene detection equipment.
- Monitor and document the functionality of safety equipment, including emergency showers, eyewash stations, fire extinguishers, and ventilation systems.
Regulatory Reporting:
- Prepare reports for external regulatory agencies and maintain documentation for committee reports, biennial reviews, Tier II filings, and contingency plans.
- Support the Environmental Management System (EMS) and manage the electronic chemical inventory system.
Emergency Response:
- Provide 24/7 support during emergency situations involving Academic and Research Safety.
- Analyze incidents, develop mitigation strategies, and assist in recovery and preparation for future emergencies.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Training in chemistry and safe handling of chemical agents, radioactive materials, and hazardous waste management.
- Comprehensive knowledge of OSHA General Industry Standards and environmental regulatory standards.
- Proficiency in word processing, spreadsheet applications, and presentation tools.
- Strong interpersonal and written communication skills.
- Experience with monitoring equipment and spill response procedures.
- Ability to collaborate effectively in a team-oriented environment across multiple departments.
